The most established of our gardens, the square shaped area is edged on three sides by mature shrubs. Hollies grow particularly well here and there is a lovely apricot tree in one corner which occasionally fruits.
The fourth side fronts onto the herb garden with a large winter flowering honeysuckle (Lonicera Fragrantissima) on one side - the fragrance is wonderful. The gravel path winds around the garden to a central circle with a statue of our daughter. This was commission when she was five as a 20th wedding anniversary present.
In 2017 we planted Philadelphus maculatus 'Mexican Jewel' as recommended by Robin Lane Fox in the FT. We have yet to experience the scent but are very much looking forward to it.
The perennial planting in this garden is being refreshed for 2018 as the "thugs" who thrive here have taken over, such as the Astrantia, and we need to establish more order !
We have tended to put lots of colourful annuals in the front of this garden as it is close to the house. A lot of plants self seed such as the Knautia macedonica, Verbena bonariensis and Orlaya grandiflora.
