This semi-circular area was constructed in 2006/7 involving excavating the soil that slopped up towards the lime trees. The height of the retaining wall gives an idea of the amount of soil removed. We excavated down further into the subsoil and mixed copious amounts of gravel into the topsoil and made the five beds.
The majority of the herbs are culinary but the middle bed (C) is a white bed and so medicinal herbs are included such as white horehound (Marrubium vulgare). We also include salad vegetables here as it is close to the house and easy to pick for meals.
We also have a collection of mints - all in pots !
