It's difficult to imagine how much work has gone into this garden .... the land sloped down to the stream and we landscaped it to be flat. This involved building a breeze block retaining wall which the yew hedge is planted on top of. The wall separating this garden from the front was built by a friend of ours in the early 2000's. We do still have a few more metres of wall to build but one day it will get done ....
The Paulownia was a 50th birthday present for my husband from our local friends - it does occasionally flower but last year the late hard frosts took all the flowers.
The columns are from the Hillier display at Chelsea Flower Show in the late 1990's and were made by Redwood Stone - the lorry bringing them over from the UK was enormous and it took several hours to unload the individual pieces by hand, each column being made up of six stones. My birthday present one year was a lorry load of topsoil for this garden.
Originally we planted up Mme Alfred Carrier roses on the columns but these proved to be too vigorous and so we have taken some out, training the ones left backwards towards the wall. We planted the garden up with herbaceous plants on a few occasions but with me only having limited time at the house, I never kept on top of the weeds and we lost most of the plants.
In 2016 we put down black plastic to help control the weeds and in 2017 we took this up and planted roses and buddlejas, using sarrasin as a mulch - it's the husk of buckwheat that is used in the production of flour for galettes. We get it from our local mill and really like the colour and texture.
The lawn is where we play "cross country" croquet as it has remained somewhat rustic. However my brother is determined to make a proper lawn here which would be such an improvement.
The roses, mostly from David Austen, performed well in their first season, we especially liked Desdemona. We hope to continue planting up this area in 2018.
